A diverse rainforest landscape in western Uganda

The park covers 766 km² and lies between 1100 and 1600 meters in elevation. Although it is primarily moist evergreen forest, it contains a diverse array of landscapes and is one of the last remaining areas to include both lowland and montane forest.

Primate Diversity

One of Africa’s highest concentrations of primates

Kibale National Forest has one of the highest diversity and concentrations of primates in Africa. There are 13 species of primates recorded in the park.

It is home to endangered chimpanzees, the red colobus monkey and the rare L’Hoest’s monkey. The park protects several well-studied habituated communities of Common Chimpanzee, as well as the Uganda Mangabey, the Ugandan Red Colobus and L’Hoest’s Monkey. Other primates found here include the black colobus and the blue monkey.

Wildlife and Ecosystem

Forest mammals, elephants and carnivores

In addition to primates, the park supports at least 60 other mammal species and over 250 tree species. The predominant ecosystem is moist evergreen and semi-deciduous forest.

Elephants move between Kibale and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Other terrestrial mammals include red and blue duikers, bushpigs, warthogs and buffalo.

Carnivores present include leopards, bushpigs, three species of duiker and two species of otter. Lions occasionally visit the park.

Birdlife

325 recorded bird species

Kibale National Park boasts 325 recorded bird species, including the olive long-tailed cuckoo, Western Green tinkerbird, African pitta, Green-breasted pitta and African Grey Parrot.

The ground thrush (Turdus kibalensis) is endemic to Kibale National Park.

Wildlife Corridor & Activities

Connected to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Kibale adjoins Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south, forming a 180 kilometre wildlife corridor between Ishasha and Sebitoli.

Guided walks can be arranged and typically take 2 to 3 hours, offering opportunities to explore the forest and observe wildlife.
