Practical Information for Your Gorilla Tours Departure

With the right preparation, you can fully relax and embrace what many travelers describe as the experience of a lifetime.

Below you’ll find everything you need to know before departing for Uganda.

Entry requirements & Visa

Before travelling to Uganda, please arrange the following:

  • Apply for your visa online via www.visas.immigration.go.ug
  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after arrival
  • Carry a printed copy of your visa approval
  • Bring your valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (mandatory for entry)

Insurance

Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is essential. Your policy should cover:

  • Medical emergencies
    Evacuation
    Trip cancellation or interruption
    Adventure activities such as gorilla trekking

This ensures peace of mind from the moment you leave home until you return

Money matters

Important information regarding payments and currency:

  • We accept USD ($50 or $100 notes printed in 2017 or later)
  • Euros and Ugandan Shillings are also accepted
  • USD printed before 2017 are not accepted
  • Notes that are torn, stamped, dirty or written on are not widely accepted
  • Bring smaller denominations for tipping

Physical preparations

Gorilla trekking takes place in mountainous rainforest terrain. You should be prepared for:

  • Steep slopes
  • Muddy trails
  • Dense vegetation
  • Humid conditions
  • Trekking times ranging from 30 minutes to 6 hours

Garden gloves and gaiters

We recommend bringing:

  • Heavy-duty garden gloves for climbing and descending
  • Solid gaiters to protect your lower legs
  • Extra protection against thorns, insects, mud and ants

 

Rainwear

Essential rain protection includes:

  • Lightweight, breathable rain jacket and trousers
  • Or a practical poncho (preferably with backpack coverage)
  • A rain cover for your daypack

 

Medications & Health

Please make sure you bring:

  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (mandatory)
  • Malaria prophylaxis
  • Personal prescription medication
  • Medication for diarrhea or constipation
  • Mosquito repellent and bite ointment
  • Basic bandages and eye drops
  • Energy glucose or dextrose sachets

 

Clothing

Recommended clothing:

  • Long-sleeved shirts and trousers
  • Light sweaters or fleece
  • T-shirts and lightweight tops
  • Shorts and sandals
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Swimwear (for lodges with pools)

 

Hygiene & Personal Care

Personal essentials:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Sunscreen
  • Deodorant
  • Nail clippers
  • Wipes and washcloth

Additional Essentials

Other useful items:

  • Face masks (required for gorilla and chimp tracking)
  • Binoculars
  • Camera with spare batteries
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Backpack for daily use
  • Flashlight or headlamp
  • Power bank and chargers
  • Books or small entertainment items

Hiring a Porter

During gorilla trekking, we strongly recommend hiring a local porter (approximately $15).

This is not a tip but a direct wage that supports the local community. Porters assist with carrying your backpack and offer a helping hand on steep terrain — making your trek significantly more comfortable.

Tipping guidelines - greatly appreciated!

Tipping is customary in Uganda and greatly appreciated. Suggested amounts:

Driver/Guide:

$5–$10 per group per day

Porters (Bwindi, Rwenzori, Elgon, Volcanoes):

$5–$10 per guest per day

Lodge Staff (via tip box):

$3–$5 per stay

National Park & Activity Guides:

  • Gorilla Trekking Ranger: $10–$15 per guest
  • Armed guards: $10–$15 per guest (per guard)
  • Chimp Trekking: $10–$15 per guest
  • Boat cruises: $5 per guest
  • Bird walks: $5 per guest
  • Game drives: $5 per guest
  • Mountain hikes: $10 per guest per day

Ultimately, tip according to your satisfaction and experience.
