The Mountain Range
A UNESCO World Heritage Site along the Uganda–Congo border
The park was established in 1991 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 because of its outstanding natural beauty.
Covering almost 1,000 square kilometres, the park protects most of the central and eastern Rwenzori Mountains. The Rwenzoris form the highest mountain range in Africa and include the continent’s third highest peak.
The range features six glacial peaks: Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, Mount Baker, Mount Luigi da Savoia, Mount Gessi and Mount Emin Pasha. The highest point, Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, rises above permanent glaciers and snowfields. The main peaks can be compared to Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya in scale and challenge.
The landscape includes glaciers, snowfields, waterfalls and mountain lakes, making it one of Africa’s most spectacular alpine regions.
