Uganda’s smallest savannah national park
At 260 square kilometres, the park is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks. It is named after Lake Mburo, which lies within the park boundaries.
Lake Mburo National Park is located in Kiruhura District in western Uganda. The park is situated about 30 kilometres east of Mbarara and approximately 240 kilometres west of Kampala.

A mosaic of lakes, woodland and grassy valleys
The park has a sculptured landscape with rolling hills and lake shores. It includes forest galleries, seasonal and permanent swamps, acacia woodland and grassy valleys that support a wide range of wildlife.
Being near the equator, the rainfall pattern is bimodal, with long rains from February to June and short rains from September to December.
68 mammal species and over 300 birds
Lake Mburo National Park hosts 68 mammal species, including impalas, plains zebras, Uganda kobs, duikers, bushbucks, topis, buffaloes, leopards, spotted hyenas, Defassa waterbucks, warthogs and oribi.
There are 315 recorded bird species. The lake shores attract crocodiles and hippopotami, while buffaloes come to drink during the dry season. The park is known for birds such as finfoots, malachite kingfishers, African fish eagles, pelicans, herons, grey crowned cranes and even the rare shoebill.
The vegetation mainly consists of open savannah with acacia trees, olea and boscia. Lake Mburo is a natural haven for fauna and flora.


Easy access from Kampala
Access to the park is via the Masaka–Mbarara Road from Kampala. The driving time to Lake Mburo National Park is approximately four hours.
