Wildlife and Big Game
Four of the Big Five in one destination
Murchison Falls National Park is home to four of the Big Five: buffalo, elephant, lion and leopard. These animals are most commonly seen in the northern sector of the park, above the Nile.
Rhinos became extinct in Uganda by 1983 due to poaching, but were reintroduced in 2005 by Rhino Fund Uganda. Today, white rhinos are bred in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located about 70 kilometres south of the park, with the goal of eventually reintroducing them into protected areas.
Activities and Experiences
Boat cruises, game drives and chimpanzee trekking
Boat trips from Paraa to the base of Murchison Falls take approximately three hours and offer close views of hippos, crocodiles and birdlife. Visitors can also hike to the top of the falls for panoramic views. At Kaniyo Pabidi, guided nature walks and chimpanzee trekking are available.
The drive from Kampala to Paraa takes about five hours, and a 4WD vehicle is recommended.
