A gorilla permit costs around USD 900 because mountain gorilla tracking is strictly limited and highly regulated to protect this endangered species. Only a small number of visitors are allowed to visit each gorilla family per day, accompanied by trained rangers and trackers. This exclusivity ensures minimal disturbance and maximum conservation impact.
The permit fees are a crucial source of funding for Uganda. A large part of the money goes to the Uganda Wildlife Authority for park management, ranger salaries, anti-poaching patrols and habitat protection. Another significant portion is invested in local communities around Bwindi, supporting schools, healthcare and community projects. By purchasing a permit, visitors directly contribute to the protection of mountain gorillas and to sustainable development in the region.
